Kinetics of proton-coupled electron-transfer reactions
The kinetics of proton-coupled electron-transfer (pcet) reactions are reported for Mn4O4(O2PPh2)6, 1, and [Mn4O4(O2PPh2)6] , 1 , with phenothiazine (pzH). Both pcet reactions form 1H, by H transfer to 1 and by hydride transfer to 1 . Surprisingly, the rate constants differ by only 25% despite large differences in the formal charges and driving force. The driving force is proportional to the dif...
متن کاملProton-coupled electron transfer.
Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is an important mechanism for charge transfer in a wide variety of systems including biology- and materials-oriented venues. We review several areas where the transfer of an electron and proton is tightly coupled and discuss model systems that can provide an experimental basis for a test of PCET theory. In a PCET reaction, the electron and proton may tran...
متن کاملSingle-Molecule Kinetics of Interfacial Electron Transfer
Measurements of single-molecule chemical reaction kinetics are demonstrated for interfacial electron transfer from excited cresyl violet molecules to the conduction band of indium tin oxide (ITO) or energetically accessible surface electronic states under ambient conditions by using a far-field fluorescence microscope. In this system, each single molecule exhibits a single-exponential electron ...
متن کاملUltrafast Photoinduced Interfacial Proton Coupled Electron Transfer from CdSe Quantum Dots to 4,4'-Bipyridine.
Pyridine and derivatives have been reported as efficient and selective catalysts for the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reduction of CO2 to methanol. Although the catalytic mechanism remains a subject of considerable recent debate, most proposed models involve interfacial proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) to electrode-bound catalysts. We report a combined experimental and theore...
متن کاملThermodynamics and kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer: stepwise vs. concerted pathways.
Reactions that involve transfer of an electron and a proton can proceed by stepwise pathways involving initial electron transfer (ET) or initial proton transfer (PT), or by a concerted pathway without an intermediate. The concerted mechanism is termed proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). Understanding such reactions requires knowledge of the thermodynamics of the possible ET, PT, and PCET s...
